Απορώ πως μου διέφυγε αυτό το ποστ από τον Robin Hanson στο Overcoming Bias (Αναπαράγω ολόκληρο το ποστ παρακάτω):

We’ve heard a lot of hyperbole about how Bush was the “Worst. President. Ever.” and Obama’s inauguration is the most exciting in a half century. So to avoid future bias, this is a good time to ask yourself: where do you set Obama’s bar? That is, what does Obama have to do for you to consider him a “good” president, or even better than Bush? It is enough for you that he is (part) black and a Democrat? Or does he actually have to do something? Or are those already insurmountable barriers to you?

For most any president today, odds are that we’d:
* be mostly out of our moderately deep recession in four years,
* add some symbolic financial rules that mostly lets old games continue,
* mostly watch as Israel, Russia, and China throw more weight around,
* mismanage another Katrina because governments are just bad at that,
* go deeper in debt “stimulating” and “bailing” because politicians love to spend,
* not much relax homeland security or immigration because we’re still scared of terrorists,
* mildly pull out of Iraq since the war has been going well lately but we don’t like to look weak,
* do little on carbon emissions or the coming Medicare train wreck as those are very expensive, and
* not reform medicine or education or welfare more than Bush’s Medicare drug benefit and “no child left behind,” or Clinton’s welfare reform, as those were unusually big changes.

So will Obama be great (or terrible) if he just follows this least-resistence path and adds a few cheap symbolic moves on stem cell research funding, gay marriage, torture definitions, wiretap limitations, or foreign abortion funding? And would that be enough for a non-black or non-Democrat?

Χτυπάω βέβαια το κεφάλι μου στον τοίχο (α) γιατί δεν σκέφτηκα να γράψω το συγκεκριμένο ποστ εγώ και (β) γιατί ήδη οι απαντήσεις που θα δώσουμε έχουν μάλλον αλλοιωθεί από τις αποφάσεις των πρώτων ημερών της διακυβέρνησης Ομπάμα (ο πήχης νομίζω έχει μετακινηθεί για τους περισσότερους από εμάς ακόμα πιο ψηλά σε σχέση με την 19η Ιανουαρίου).

Θα έσπαγα την απάντηση στο ερώτημα σε δύο ή τρία μέρη: ποια στοιχεία θα μας οδηγούσαν σε μια κρίση πως η προεδρία Ομπάμα ήταν “μια από τα ίδια” (αλλά καλύτερα από τον GWB – δείτε την λίστα του Hanson παραπάνω), απλά καλή ή εξαιρετική/υπερβατική; Υπάρχουν αρκετά ζητήματα που μπορούν να τεθούν μέσα από τις απαντήσεις… μπορεί να μιλήσει κανείς για επιπτώσεις της προεδρίας στην Αμερική ή και για ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη (με κάποια αναμφισβήτητα δυσκολία σε θέματα αιτιότητας, για την επιλογή πολιτικών με σαφείς προθέσεις ή και για τα αποτελέσματα αυτών των πολιτικών, ποσοτικές (hard data) ή ποιοτικές κρίσεις κ.ο.κ.

Η δική μου λίστα θα εμφανιστεί μαζί με την δική σας στα σχόλια…

Από μόνη της, η σημερινή ορκωμοσία του Μπαράκ Ομπάμα δεν έχει ούτε αισθητική, ούτε πολιτική αξία. Έχει όμως μεγάλη συμβολική σημασία. Και είναι πιθανότατα κι η τελευταία φορά που θα μαζευτούμε εδώ (όσοι μαζευτούμε τέλος πάντων, τέτοια άγρια ώρα =) για να τον τραγουδήσουμε.

Θα αποχαιρετήσουμε μεγαλοθύμως και με ιδιαίτερη ανακούφιση την απερχόμενη διοίκηση, θα ανακηρύξουμε, με τον απαραίτητο στόμφο, την σημερινή ως κορυφαία ομιλία της καριέρας του, θα σχολιάσουμε τις επιλογές των προσώπων που απαρτίζουν την ομάδα Ομπάμα, τις προτεραιότητες της διοίκησής του, τις ρεαλιστικές προσδοκίες για την ερχόμενη τετραετία, αυτά που ετοιμάζει ο νέος πρόεδρος για την Ελλάδα (not!) και πολλά άλλα, βαθύτερα πολιτικά: τους πειραματισμούς των παραδοσιακών μέσων με τα social media, το ύφος του Μπιλ Κλίντον, τα δάκρυα του Κιθ Όλμπερμαν, το πάντσουτ της νέας υπουργίνας των εξωτερικών, την ανταπόκριση του Μιχάλη Ιγνατίου, κλπ.

Τα λέμε γύρω στις 6 το απόγευμα ώρα Ελλάδας. Αν δεν είστε ανάμεσα στα εκατοντάδες εκατομμύρια που θα κάθονται εκείνη την ώρα μπροστά σε μια τηλεόραση, ρίξτε μια ματιά εδώ.

As far as powerful slogans go, it doesn’t get much better than this. And Carol Bartz, CEO of Autodesk, Inc., the world’s leading maker of design software, may well be the only high-tech executive in a position to say such a thing with a straight face. (more…)
